A plain-language introduction to what behaviour communicates.

Behaviour is a form of communication. When someone finds a situation overwhelming, painful or frightening — and doesn't have another way to express it — behaviour can become the message. Positive Behaviour Support starts by asking what that message might be.
Looking for the “why”
Rather than focusing only on stopping a behaviour, we look at what is happening around it: the environment, relationships, sensory experiences, health, and unmet needs. Understanding the function of a behaviour helps us respond in a way that is respectful and genuinely useful.
This is why assessment takes time and involves the people who know the person best. The goal is a clear, shared understanding — not a quick fix.
What changes look like
When needs are understood and met, and new skills are built, behaviours of concern often ease on their own. People feel safer, more capable and more in control — which is the outcome that matters most.
